Originally a registered nurse specialising in neurology and neurorehabilitation, Julie brings a long held interest and expertise in how the brain works. A move to New Zealand 13 years ago prompted a career shift into education with a role as a Learning Coach at Te Raekura Redcliffs Primary School in Christchurch.
Working with Jo at Redcliffs introduced Julie to Structured Literacy. Its neurological basis addressed her disillusionment with learning interventions that relied on children simply and repetitively memorising lists of whole words without being taught to understand the rules and principles of language. Julie believes Structured Literacy gives all children a tool kit that leads to strong foundation skills in reading, spelling and writing.
